SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL DIRECTION?

Christians believe that God is always present and active. The problem is that we're not usually very good at noticing His work. We need help learning to reflect on our lives to see His fingerprints. We need someone to listen to us as we speak about the relationships and circumstances we're experiencing and notice the ways that the Holy Spirit may be moving.

A short description of what goes on in spiritual direction:

  • a director creates a safe and honest environment to talk about our life with God, including questions and doubts.

  • the director who has the Holy Spirit inside them is listening carefully both to you and to the Spirit.

  • an opportunity to have someone ask you questions about what you're experiencing, to help you look more carefully at the work of God in and around you.

  • a space to take what you are experiencing to God, and talk to him about it through prayer, and to listen to what He has to say.

  • a place where silence is often used to help facilitate prayer.

People will sometimes use the term “Holy Listening” to describe Spiritual Direction. During a session, there is a conversation happening between three persons in the room. The Director, the Directee, and the Holy Spirit.

Spiritual Directors act as companions and guides on the spiritual journey.

  • I am available to meet in person at my office in Auburn, IL. I am also able to do direction over Zoom, so distance is not a barrier.

  • I welcome anyone who is interested in exploring spiritual direction regardless of whether you are a Christian or a member of a church. However, I do practice direction from the perspective of historical Christianity. I believe that the spiritual life is grounded in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as God has revealed himself.

While you don’t have to currently be part of a denomination or church, I also affirm that being part of a community of faith is a critical part of growing spiritually.

  • I received my certification in spiritual direction from Sustainable Faith. The school of Spiritual Direction curriculum includes the enneagram, Ignatian Spirituality, and an overview of the overlap between neurology, psychology, and spirituality.
